Franklin’s Wellness Check

The first week of July, Franklin had his first official wellness visit. We took a recommendation for a vet. It’s a twenty minute ride and, unfortunately, was the same day as a mega thunderstorm. Franklin was less than amused at being in the car that long. But, he held his own.
It was a late day appointment and, because of the severe weather, we had to leave rather early. I wanted to avoid the majority of the storm. This also meant that their were several patients there already- three small dogs and a puppy. The puppy’s owner was more concerned with his phone than us, but, I saw the exchanged glances from the small dog parents. A pitbull had arrived and they were nervous.

#Sponsored Book Spotlight: There’s a Monkey In My Backpack!: Don M. Winn

SYNOPSIS:Did you know? One in five children in the United States has a learning difficulty such as dyslexia or ADHD. These challenges can make children feel inadequate, misunderstood, and frustrated in and out of the classroom, yet – if harnessed correctly – they can also be viewed as beneficial and consequently empower the kids who live with them.
In the clever and truly helpful new book There’s a Monkey in My Backpack! (September 2019), Winn explores how learning difficulties affect kids in a unique way that helps children and those who care for them to better understand their challenges. Winn writes from his personal experience as a lifelong dyslexic reader and writer.
There’s a Monkey in My Backpack! follows Anna, a third-grade student who has an unusual companion – a monkey in her backpack! Not everyone can see him, but he causes a whole lot of trouble for Anna by mixing up her spelling letters, distracting her in class, and making it hard for her to keep up with her schoolwork. He causes so many problems for Anna that she wonders if she will ever make it to the end of third grade with the other children. But she learns that her troublesome monkey can also be a big help to her if she learns to understand, accept, and appreciate her unique situation.

MY THOUGHTS: Written for the elementary school reader, ‘There’s A Monkey’ offers a unique perspective to learning disabilities. Instead of an invisible thing, the author portrays the issue as a physical thing that can be handled, seen, and communicated with. Third grader, Anna, our heroine, is given two choices: either fight the monkey or accept and deal with his antics. By showing children that they can regain control of their actions and learning path, Mr. Winn offers them options they may not have considered. It’s empowering.

Illustrator Dave Allred has done a wonderful job depicting Anna and her monkey. The colorful pictures will keep younger readers engaged while giving a great visual to older readers. This book may not be geared toward every child, but I believe it will be helpful to those who’ve been recently diagnosed, don’t understand their diagnosis or have a sibling with learning disabilities. These kids have a lot on their plates so anything we can do to help them is a plus.

Encouraging and engaging, I give it a 3 star rating.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Don M. Winn is a multiple award-winning children’s author of thirteen picture books and the Sir Kaye the Boy Knight® series of novels for independent readers. As a dyslexia advocate and a dyslexic himself, he frequently addresses parents and educators on how to maximize the value of shared reading time and how to help dyslexic and other struggling readers to learn to love to read. Winn lives and writes in Round Rock, Texas.
In addition to his latest picture book, Winn’s first nonfiction book, Raising a Child with Dyslexia: What Every Parent Needs to Know is forthcoming this fall. In October, Winn will be the keynote speaker at the Central Texas Dyslexia Conference.

#Sponsored Book Spotlight: Great American Artists for Kids: Hands-On Art Experiences in the Styles of Great American Masters: MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga

SYNOPSIS:An exciting second edition, Great American Artists for Kids allows young readers to explore the American art scene while learning how to create their own masterpieces. From the award-winning author of Discovering Great Artists, MaryAnn F. Kohl pairs with Kim Solga to introduce children to 75 influential artists ranging from the 18th century to modern times. Each profile is accompanied by activities with step-by-step instructions teaching young readers how to incorporate artists’ techniques into art projects. Color-coded icons facilitate the learning experience by indicating the skill level, adult involvement and materials necessary for activities. With additional resources for art viewing, children will be inspired to pursue their art interests as they learn what made artists like Harriet Powers, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein so memorable

MY THOUGHTS: Fantastic! I was so happy to review this one. This age group (4-12) is often overlooked when it comes to art/art history. They may gain exposure to the big names (Da Vinci, Picasso), but there are so many other, noteworthy artists to study. I’m always a fan of books that serve more than one purpose in more than one area of study. Here we have art, history, and reading class. Older children can also build off the information for a unique biography report. Being from Pennsylvania, I was pleased to see Frank Lloyd Wright & Andy Warhol included.

Big wow factors for this book include the interactive features where creativity comes into play and the extensive glossary included. Reading about art techniques is one thing; imitating those techniques is another. There are so many fabulous plusses to having this book in your homeschool library. If you’re child goes to brick-and-mortar school, this is an invaluable asset for them, too. They will return to this book time and again for multiple classes. It is a definite 5 star book. Hopefully, IPG will continue to make more books similar to this one.

#Sponsored Book Spotlight: How to Survive on a Desert Island: Operation Robinson! by Denis Tribaudeau

SYNOPSIS: Calling all castaways! You’ve probably pretended to be an explorer alone on a desert island in the middle of the ocean. It’s a fantastic adventure! But if you were shipwrecked and washed ashore, do you think you’d be able to survive? If you’ve read this book, the answer is yes, without a doubt! Learn how to light a fire without matches, build a shelter, find water and make it safe to drink, treat small wounds, read the sky, tie different kinds of knots, let people know you are there, and much more. Are you ready to become a Robinson Caruso? If you know where to look, nature will give you everything you need.

Soft cover
$14.99

MY THOUGHTS: I was absolutely amazed by this book. I’ve seen a number of news stories as of late detailing how children have survived harrowing experiences thanks, in part, to survival training. Anything can happen and equipping our children to survive in situations apart from their everyday life is a priceless gift.
This book walks the reader through a number of essential tips that will help them overcome a bad situation. Don’t mistake the beautiful drawings as belonging to a fictional book. They add to the understanding of the skills described. The information inside the book is vital. These are not things taught in a regular classroom. They should be, but, if you haven’t thought of having your children attend a survival class, this is the ideal place to start.
Easy to understand, expertly written, and wonderfully illustrated, this 5 star book should be in every classroom and read by as many children as possible.

About the Author & Illustrator:
Denis Tribaudeau, a French expert in survival training, has a big reputation for “extreme adventures.” A modern-day Indiana Jones with more than twenty years of travel experience, he has taken clients on amazing adventures around the globe and given advice to more than 1,000 survival students.
After studying art in Nancy and Amien, Karine Maincent left France to work for two years in Benin as a graphic designer at L’Institut Français de Cotonou. On her return to France in 2009, she opened the graphic design company the Tokpa Studio, where she creates colorful illustrations and animates creative workshops for children.
