Guest Post: 5 Signs Your Loved One is in an Abusive Relationship

The following is a guest post written by Rosemary Lombardy.
5 Signs Your Loved One is in an Abusive Relationship

1.Changed behavior or demeanor. This person used to be happy, friendly, and confident, but is now apathetic, withdrawn, anxious, jumpy, apologetic, secretive, or fearful. She exhibits low self-esteem, doesn’t trust her own judgment, or is depressed.

2.Negative coping behavior. Excessive drinking, drug use, overeating, overconsumption of caffeine or sugar, or frequent shopping sprees are common coping mechanisms used by abuse victims.

3.Excessive contact and control. Her abuser texts or calls her frequently when she is in the company of others to see what she is doing and who she is with, keeping her on a very short leash. She answers his every call or text.

4.Isolating behavior. She no longer spends time with friends or family because of the controlling demands of her partner, who deliberately isolates her from needed support. She relents to please him and avoid conflict.

5.Unexplained bruises or accidents. The victim covers up her bruises with makeup or clothing and will make up excuses if she is confronted with suspicions because she is afraid and mortified.

“Many women never tell anyone that they are being abused because they are embarrassed and ashamed or fearful of repercussions,” says candid abuse survivor and author Rosemary Lombardy. “It is not always possible to know, but there are telltale signs that may indicate that abuse is going on.”
Lombardy is author of the new book, Breaking Bonds: How to Divorce an Abuser and Heal – A Survival Guide [February 8, 2019]. She has advice for women to end any relationship successfully – mentally and financially. Her goal is to offer a comprehensive plan to foster self-awareness, self-responsibility, empowerment, and critical thinking so that women can break the cycle of abuse and truly heal to transform their lives.

MY THOUGHTS: The first thing you’ll notice is that the oil looks incredibly cool. No pun intended! Initially, it appears to be two-toned until shaken. The scent is an amazing blend that smells edible! It will not mix with other facial care product scents. I have a variety of make-up products, each with a unique scent, and this oil delicately complimented those.

For 2 weeks, I followed the directions perfectly. It’s used after cleansing, but before face cream. Being that it is the first Lumene product I have in my skincare regime, I followed it with a brand name cream. After cleansing with micellar water as usual, I applied the oil. My first impression, after the fantastic scent, was that it felt light-weight and a lot like the micellar water.

There wasn’t a greasy feeling. It was barely visible. It absorbed quite quickly. After applying a face cream, I definitely noticed that the cream went on smoother. There was a visible difference in the brightness of my skin. As for make-up application, I needed less highlighter than usual. Even under my full coverage foundation, there was still a noticeable brightness.

Now, several weeks after beginning use of the product, I still continue to see improvement. Sans make-up, my skin retains a brightness, even first thing in the morning. For me, Lumene’s Arctic Berry Cocktail Brightening Hydra Oil is a win!

Guest Post: ‘Help to Make the Right Choice in a College Counselor’

The following is a guest post from Laurie Kopp Weingarten, CEP.

Private counselor, educational consultant, college coach, IEC, Certified Educational Planner – these are all terms used to describe an expert who helps high school students prepare for and apply to college.

But, how many of these so called “experts” really know their stuff?

“A very small percentage,” said Laurie Kopp Weingarten, CEP, a graduate of The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, who then went on to receive her MBA at Harvard Business School. “In fact, only 20% of self-proclaimed college counselors are currently associated with an industry-related professional organization.”

Weingarten, who was awarded her CEP (Certified Educational Planner) by the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners (AICEP) is one of the founders and Director of College Admission Counseling for One-Stop College Counseling. She warns parents searching for a reputable college counselor for their son or daughter to ask questions – the right questions – in order to know that they have chosen a counselor who is certified, experienced, and knows the intricate details of the college application process.

“Applying to colleges today is far more competitive than it ever was,” said Weingarten, whose children were both accepted to Ivy League schools. “Parents and students need the advice and direction of someone who is up to date with the admissions process and can successfully navigate in their child’s best interest, she adds. “But, it’s not about getting into an Ivy League university; it’s about attending a school where the student thrives and is happy – a school that is best suited for this teen,” she continues. “And, beware of any college consultants who claim they can guarantee admission into a particular school. There is no such thing as a guarantee unless there is a 100% acceptance rate!”

So, what are the questions that parents need to ask a potential college counselor?
· Are you a Certified Educational Planner?
· Are you affiliated with any well-established professional organizations?
· Do you visit colleges? If so, how often?
· Do you attend conferences and other training to stay current with trends and changes being made with regard to college admissions?
· How do you help with college essays? (Stay away from anyone who will write them for your student!)
· How long have you been in this business and how many students have you advised?
· How do you prep students for their college interviews?
· How do you create a balanced list with reach, target and likely schools?
· What is your success rate for getting students into their “dream” schools?
· Do you help students select schools that are affordable?
· Are you familiar with which colleges award student scholarships?
· How do you help select the colleges that are the best fit?
