SYNOPSIS:Written by New York Times bestselling author Shea Fontana and illustrated by Yancey Labat, Search for Atlantis is an action-packed underwater adventure perfect for readers ages 6-12. The story explores themes of friendship, teamwork and self-empowerment, and features several new DC characters including Mera and Aquaman. The book is a great introduction to these characters before they hit the big screen in the upcoming Aquaman film later this year and is a relatable story for kids starting the new school year.

MY THOUGHTS: I was so intrigued by this new, graphic novel from DC. The additions of Raven & Mera are an exciting twist! Many parents will recognize Raven from the original Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! The latter was a mainstay in our house while my boys were growing up. We’ve always been HUGE DC fans.

I’m embarrassed that I hadn’t picked up on this series before this 6th installment! We’ve been missing out! In addition to the FANTASTIC artwork by Yancey Labat, these graphic novels have so much to offer. First and foremost, Girl Power! We have strong, sensible female leads, completely capable of problem-solving. Impressionable girls in this 6-12 age bracket need constant reassurance & reminding that they are capable, strong, and intelligent. Here we have superheroes of all different backgrounds and appearance, working together for a goal.

The Superheroes also have to make a conscious effort to work together. While they experience jealousy and inferiority, they put their personal feelings aside to help others. So, we have 3 reinforced, moral messages: self-empowerment, teamwork, and being a good friend. Wrapped up in the exciting Superhero Girls action, it is a definite win!

The graphic novel will be available October 2nd. Mark your calendars!
