Book Spotlight: The Friend: Teresa Driscoll

SYNOPSIS:On a train with her husband, miles from home and their four-year-old son, Ben, Sophie receives a chilling phone call. Two boys are in hospital after a tragic accident. One of them is Ben.
She thought she could trust Emma, her new friend, to look after her little boy. After all, Emma’s a kindred spirit—someone Sophie was sure she could bear her soul to, despite the village rumours. But Sophie can’t shake the feeling that she’s made an unforgivable mistake and now her whole family is in danger.
Because how well does she know Emma, really? Should she have trusted her at all?
Time is running out. Powerless to help her child, still hours from home, Sophie is about to discover the truth. And her life will never be the same.

MY THOUGHTS: Seriously, this book tops my list of the best I’ve read this year. Much like its predecessor ‘I Am Watching You’, you need to buckle up so you can handle the twists & turns. Teresa Driscoll is very talented. With the many plates spinning, she managed to not let any break. Her characters are so multi-dimensional that readers will be hard-pressed to know the whole ‘story’ until the last chapter. I certainly didn’t.

Again, DI Melanie Sanders and her ex-cop turned PI friend, Matthew Hill make appearances. We get a more personal glimpse into both their lives. As with ‘Watching’, Teresa Driscoll slides in many ‘hot topics’ which add a reality to her fictional folk. Here we have postpartum depression, various mental illnesses, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. Each character suffering in his or her own unique way. All culminating into a fabulous, oh-my-goodness thriller.

It was hard to put down and I lost a few hours of sleep here & there because I had to see what was going to happen! Well-written, thrilling, suspenseful, and I highly recommend it. 5 Stars!

‘Daphne & Velma Original Movie’ On DVD/Blu-Ray 5/22 #WBPromotion

I received the product mentioned in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

PRODUCT INFO: Jeepers! Your favorite mystery solving teenagers are back in an all-new, live-action feature length movie! Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release Daphne & Velma on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD on May 22, 2018. The film stars Sarah Jeffery (Disney’s “Descendants: Wicked World”) and Sarah Gilman (ABC’s “Last Man Standing”), and is produced by Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Tisdale’s Blondie Girl Productions. Daphne & Velma will carry a suggested retail price of $19.98 for the DVD and $24.98 for the Blu-ray.

State of the art robots and high-tech gadgets are common sights at Ridge Valley High, an innovative center of learning for some of the brightest minds in the country, including new transfer student, the bright & optimistic Daphne Blake (Sarah Jeffery) who is excited to finally go to school with her online bestie, the whip-smart & analytical Velma Dinkley (Sarah Gilman). But not everything is as innocent as it seems as mysterious disappearances begin to plague the top-performing students on campus. Once cheery and full of life, kids now appear in a “zombiefied” state – lifeless and shells of themselves. Can Daphne and Velma learn to work together and save the students or will they become the next victims? Get ready for thrills and laughs as we follow the first adventures of Mystery Inc.’s fierce female duo.

Daphne and Velma, the smart and resourceful women of Scooby-Doo fame, come to life in this all-new mystery,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WBHE, Vice President, TV Marketing, Family & Animation. “Young girls will be delighted to discover how these clever heroines come together for their very first mystery demonstrating that no mystery is too big for these “meddling” girls to solve!”

MY THOUGHTS: My husband, youngest (15 yrs old) son, & I watched ‘Daphne & Velma’ as part of a Friday night/family night. Three different age groups and all 3 of us LOVED it! Although we had two, strong female leads, there was no gender bias hinting the girls of Mystery Inc. were more intelligent or interesting than the boys. Both characters were presented as capable, strong-willed, and determined teens.
Of course, the girly girl in me adored Daphne’s automated closet and her quick wit with outfit prep. My son & husband loved the tech aspects especially all the automation in the high school and the internet friendship the girls had. As an avid reader, I love a good mystery. If you think that this one would be obvious or easy to solve, you’re mistaken. Daphne & Velma have to work for this one. Yes, the clues are there and even my son thought he had it figured out only to have missed the mark.
Occasionally, direct-to-DVD movies get a bad rep. Somehow consumers often feel they weren’t ‘good’ enough for theaters. This movie breaks that stereotype as well as any glass ceilings. It is a fabulous movie! Both actresses are superb. Their supporting cast was well chosen and it plays out so smoothly that one would think it was part of a regular show. Daphne and Velma are average, modern teens who happen to be really into solving mysteries. EXCELLENT! I would watch it again and if you or a loved one is a Scooby Doo fan, add this to the collection. I give it 5 stars!

“Daphne & Velma” is produced by Blue Ribbon Content and Blondie Girl Productions with Production Services provided by Lifeboat Productions Inc. Ashley Tisdale (Young & Hungry), Jennifer Tisdale (Her Universe Fashion Show), Amy Kim (Confess, Chosen), Jaime Burke (Cassandra French’s Finishing School, Quantum Break) and Suzi Yoonessi (Olive and Mochha: First Kiss) serve as producers, with Yoonessi also directing from a script written by Kyle Mack & Caitlin Meares.
