SYNOPSIS:“Award-winning and Amazon best-selling author, Richie Frieman, announces the launch of his new children’s book: Maddy & Cole: The Food Truck Grand Prix, Vol. 1 (The Omnibus Publishing, ISBN 978-0-9986811-5-3) on March 13, 2018. The book takes you on an adventurous ride with the energetic and entrepreneurial pre-teen Maddy. She sets her sights on winning Baltimore’s premiere food truck competition with her grandfather and using the prize money to buy herself a coveted new bicycle. Along the way, she finds the road is fraught with many obstacles, including stiff competition, unexpected twists and her own self-doubt. In the end, Maddy learns much more from her affable grandpa than just how to run a food truck, but also how belief in oneself, passion and integrity are far more valuable than anything money can buy.”
MY THOUGHTS:I absolutely L-O-V-E this book! From page one, I was into the story. Mr. Frieman has the actions/words/thought patterns for this age group nailed down. Maddy has that I’m-almost-a-grown-up feistiness on display while the little girl in her still wants to be loved & cared for by her family. The way she cares about her little brother is exactly the kind of sibling interaction that is missing in books for this age group. They need a heroine who is bold, but knows it’s ok to put her little brother’s feelings ahead of her own.
The Underdog theme is rarely used properly in YA anymore, unless it’s a werewolf versus a vampire. How nice to read about some good, wholesome children and their family rising above life’s challenges. No violence. No cussing. No risky situations. Pure, well-written fiction that is relatable and has a strong moral compass. We need more books like this on the shelves.
The plot is definitely a new idea. Having the entire family involved with a food truck business is a fantastic idea. It incorporates action and humor. Every child in this age group-boy or girl- will see something in Maddy that they’ll love and they’ll want to keep reading. She’s the underdog heroine that we all cheer for. I truly hope Mr. Frieman takes this series as far as possible. I’ve been recommending it and will continue to do so. It is a full 5 star book.
