The Cooper Files: Preston W. Child & Matthew King

Book #4 The Relic Hunters

D.B. Cooper hijacked a plane and simply disappeared from history. Although he hurt no one, he did escaped with around $200,000. Last accounts place him parachuting from the plane to somewhere in Tacoma, WA. No body was ever found, no motive discovered, and only a few thousand dollars was recovered. So, what became of the man known as D.B. Cooper?

Mark Lockheed has returned to Moscow after his last harrowing ordeal. New addition to the family, baby Claude, and Kathy, Mark’s wife, are happy to have him homebound. But, lack of adventure is wearing on Mark. After consulting his best friend & professor, also named Claude, he decides to join the professor at his university as an assistant. Paris will be a nice change of pace.

College student, Michelle, is just a tad obsessed over D.B. Cooper. Following her father’s passion, she took up the torch and began her own search from the elusive criminal after her father passed away. News clippings and maps pepper her dorm room walls. Once she hears that Mark can find just about anything that’s lost, she & friend, Marc, appeal to him to help them.

After much ado, the three set off on an expedition to discover what exactly happened to Cooper. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Kathy has received strange visitors. Although she has no understanding of Mark’s last misadventure, Kathy knows something is off. When adult Claude presents her with a chance to travel to India while Mark is away, she jumps on it. It’ll be the biggest misstep of her life.

Two separate mysteries await our friends. But, only one will be solved here in Book 4…………

I had huge expectations for this installment. For the most part, the book was great. The whole D.B. angle was interesting & a unique take. Honestly, my only info on him was from the Seth Green movie, ‘Without A Paddle’. Mark & his crew were well presented in their mystery. It was rational & a 4 star book.

On a more personal note, it was my intention to finish the 5 book series. I did skip book 1 due to the anti-Biblical sentiments used in it. However, each installment afterward ended with a cliffhanger. It’s as annoying as the ‘Walking Dead’ finale. Regardless, I started reading Book 5. Without spoilers, I’ll just say that it is irrational, ludicrous and disappointing. Our authors had a plethora of ways to do the angle. They chose one so cheesy, I didn’t even finish the first chapter. To me, it felt so wrong that I was no longer motivated to finish the series. Supernatural is one thing. Imaginative, creative writing is great. Pointless drivel is quite another.

As an avid reader, I found it insulting that I bought a series, not just one, but the whole thing & the authors played their plots this way. If you chose to write Spiritual sci-fi, then write it throughout so that readers know what they’re getting into. Tremendously disappointing, gentlemen.

May the Beauty Be With You Featuring Beauty Box 5

IMG_0065Whether or not you’re using ‘The Force’, you want to look good. While those pesky April showers have overstayed their welcome into May, cheer up! Our May Beauty Box has arrived. Maybe Friday the 13th isn’t always bad, eh?

For May, Beauty Box 5’s theme is ‘Mer-May-d’ as in a box with a nautical theme. Included this month are 3 full-sized products.
If this is your first time hearing of BB5, it’s a monthly subscription box delivered to you via USPS. For $12 per month, you get 5 new or new-to-you products to try, love, like, or veto. Added up, the box is worth $106.99. Wow! Economically beauty without traffic or lines. Let’s take a look at May.

First, we have 2 eye products. Elizabeth Mott’s ‘You’re So Fine’ Liquid Liner in Glitterati is our first full-sized product (MSRP $18). Its base color is awesome. It’s a deep black shade. Glitter is sprinkled throughout it. I love the black shade & even the touch of glitter. I also appreciate its waterproof consistency. However, even after using a light touch to apply it, it goes on really heavy. By the end of the day, it was peeling & flecking off. This created an issue with my contacts. I’ve been having contact issues due to allergies anyway so it more or less exacerbated the issue. Elizabeth Mott has great products that I am a fan of, but this isn’t one of them.
Glamour Dolls ‘Splash Proof Mascara’ lives up to its waterproof claims. Although it isn’t the best mascara ever, it definitely works as well as other brands.  of $4.99, it’s a fine investment if you plan on doing a lot of swimming this summer. In this month’s box, it’s our second full-sized product. As a side note, I wouldn’t apply too many coats of it as it’s prone to clumping.IMG_0070

If you’re looking to sport a tan without UV rays, Mystic Tan offers you ‘Mocha-Kyssed Bronzer Lotion’. Make sure you wash your hands after applying! I’m sure most of us have made the mistake of not doing so & having super dark hands for days. It’s for full body tanning. I’m not much of a bronzer person; however, I’d definitely consider Mystic Tan’s lotion if I had an event coming up or was headed to the pool. The MSRP is $35 which seems pretty normal for quality bronzer.

IMG_0067Sun, salt water, and/or chlorine kill our hair every year. Briogeo supplies us with ‘Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-in Spray’. That’s a large title to say ‘Hair Help’ which is exactly what it is & does!

Having well water here, I have to keep my hair extra moisturized daily. If I don’t, it’ll have the consistency of a potato chip. I’ve tried many different brands & I have to say, I really like this one. The scent is fabulous and it didn’t way down my hair which is on the limp side to begin with. I like that it also protects hair from UV rays. With an MSRP of $20, I find it to be a worthy investment.

‘Luxurious Lipstick in Crush’ from Appeal Cosmetic is our fifth & final product. Also, it’s the third full-sized addition. Vibrant is the adjective they use & I can’t argue with that. It most definitely pops. I just wish they’d have sent me a different shade (red, pink, anything). I received ‘Crush’ which is coral no matter how you name it. I can’t wear coral. It makes me look deceased. But, the lipstick itself is definitely smooth and bright. But, for an MSRP of $29, I found it didn’t last. After 2 glasses of water, it was gone. That’s not good news for mermaids.

All in all, Beauty Box 5 never fails to impress with the amount & quality of products they deliver each month. By far, it’s my favorite subscription service. Each month, deliveries are timely & they will always give you a reason to smile.IMG_0068

Southern Stalker: Hope Callaghan

Episode 3- Sweet Southern Sleuths Short Stories: Book 3

Since moving to Misery, Mississippi, twins Lacy & Loretta Sweet have already had their share of trouble. Two corpses were enough! Now, local diner waitress, Fancy, has asked Loretta to help her find out the identity of a stalker.

Reluctantly, Loretta, with help from Uncle Ichabod & Lacy, tackles this new mystery. Someone has sent Fancy an ominous note & her apartment has been broken in to. They need to determine who before Fancy gets hurt.

I was glad to see that our author spent much more time on the crime than in the first 2 books. While there was still character development & new townspeople introduced, there were more clues, suspects, & mystery this time around. A good, one hour read, it’s a 4 star book.

Pains & Penalties: Sarah Biglow

‘A Geeks and Things Novella #1’

Kalina Greystone has returned to her hometown to take over her deceased father’s comic book store. Working with her nephew, AJ, she is updating & preparing to take items to the town’s Solstice Fair. Residents of Ellesworth, Massachusetts gather yearly to celebrate in the carnival atmosphere & dedicate the proceed to Wounded Warriors.

While she enjoys the carnival, she’s looking forward to spending some time with former love interest, Christian Harper, who is now a detective. Together they attend the Fair’s main attraction, the pastry competition. Every year, seasoned citizens, Mrs. Grant & Mrs. Davies clean house with their baked goods. No one expects it to be anything other than a landslide win for either lady.

Unfortunately, the competition doesn’t go off as planned. Then, poor Mrs. Davies is given some poisoned tea. Now, the town is stunned and the focus has shifted from scones to murder. Who’d poison a sweet lady like Mrs. Davies? Even after Christian warns her to steer clear, Kalina is determined to lend a hand to investigators.

What sets ‘Pains & Penalties’ apart from the usual cozy mysteries, is the great plot. There was enough info stuffed into the limited amount of pages to fill a full length novel. There were plenty of suspects, plenty of clues, and suspense. Kalina’s story is unique as it isn’t often that a Comic Book store is the main setting along with a female owner. That’s a nice switch. Usually Cozies have restaurants or baking-related store owners as their heroines. It was nice to have Kalina’s entrepreneurial spunk highlighted.

It definitely is a short book that delivers big time appeal. I would absolutely continue with the series. It’s a 5 stars from me.
