Gift Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week

Who influenced you?
Whether you attended a brick-and-mortar school or learned at home, someone taught you. As a society, we tend to lump teachers into a group of people who work in the field of education. In reality, teachers are everywhere. Some of my most influential teachers were the ones who spent an hour with me every Sunday morning. Through their Sunday School lessons, I grew in faith & love. For you, it may be a basketball coach or mom & dad. Wherever & however you were taught, they made an impact on who you are today.

How do you thank someone for such a contribution?
Finding the best way to thank someone can be difficult. In today’s busy world, gifts that are heartfelt yet practical are best. Teacher Peach offers an array of gifts that have both the meaning & practicality that you’re looking for in a gift of gratitude.20160310_200023We’ll focus on two examples here.
20160310_195742‘The Modern Color-4-Piece Desk Set’ provides 4 much needed items. Whether grading papers or hanging artwork, a stapler is always an elusive item when you need it. With its bright blue color, it easily stands out among standard, metallic models.
20160310_195827I appreciate the deep cup pen/pencil holder. The depth makes it less likely to topple when you grab a pen hastily. As for the supplies holder, I can never find a paperclip or rubber band when I need them. Having them together encourages me to be more organized.
20160310_195906No one likes the plain, plastic tape that stores sell. Having your tape handy in this bright, green dispenser not only keeps it from balling up when little hands need tape, but adds a pretty touch to your desk area.
20160310_195941
Despite what you my have heard, you can NEVER have too many tote bags! Personally, I have one for every task. Let special teachers proudly display their profession on an item they’ll use everyday with the ‘Yes. I Teach.’ Jumbo Rainbow Black Tote 20160310_195559The simple, but profound message displayed, in multi-color against the all black bag reminds them how much they do each day. A deep, main pocket plus side & front, zip allows plenty of room for just about anything from Bibles to binders and even a purse or lunch bag if you’re in a hurry! I love the sturdy construction paired with it’s go-with-any-outfit color scheme.

Teacher Peach has an item for any educator. Aside from these, they offer items for classroom use and even subscription boxes which are highly popular these days. With Teacher Appreciation Week coming soon, May 2nd-6th, take note of those in your children’s lives who make a difference. Pay attention to those who quietly encourage from the background as well as those visible on the front lines. As for homeschooling families, why not honor your spouse’s efforts or perhaps a grandparent who offers their own unique perspectives on certain classes? They are teachers, too.

To those who teach, in any capacity, thank you for all you do.

Chelsey: Day 2

Sunday March 6th:
20160307_150800After Chelsey’s first, mostly sleepless night, I stayed at home with Buster while our youngest & my husband drove her to the Vet Clinic. Usually, these clinics are open for only two hours & I’ll admit that I was concerned when they were gone until long after the clinic closed. I had nothing to worry about!
When they arrived home, both my guys were smiling. Chelsey was wrapped in a blanket (my overprotective nature though the wind was chilly) and happily purring. With both his arms loaded with bags, my husband began detailing the day’s adventure.
When they arrived at Petco, there were very few people waiting ahead of them. That’s rare. When we took Buster, both times, it was crowded. A lovely female vet looked her over thoroughly. Miss Chelsey is 8 weeks old. Although her diet consisted of stinkbugs for at least several days, possibly a week, she weighed in at 2.2 pounds. Fur growth was sporadic with some thick spots & some quite thin. Rib bones were visible as well. Eyes & ears are both clean & healthy which is truly a miracle.
Chelsey got all the shots for her age & the vet gave my husband some sound nutritional advice for her. Our Buster has eaten 4Health since we got him & we were delighted that they make a comparable cat food. She didn’t seem interested in wet food. I have no idea if that’s personal preference, bad memories, or taste. But, the vet gave solid advice about how much dry food to give. Along with the shots & information, the vet provided him with pamphlets & wellness materials to help us out.
Grateful, he thanked her for all her help & decided that they’d run over to Tractor Supply to get the 4Health food and anything else they wanted for her. My son had tucked her into his hoodie as the wind outside had picked up. As the entered the store, Chelsey popped her head out of the hoodie. Nearby customers gushed over her, asking to pet her and showering her with attention. She ate that up with a spoon!
Content & purring, Chelsey seems to be the cat minority who really likes driving and doesn’t mind crowds! If nothing else, I hope she felt loved & appreciated during her moment of fame.
Back at home, we let Chelsey reset as we discussed food measurements & keeping Buster from ‘sharing’. Testing the waters with just a few nuggets of food, she heard it rattle in the dish & dashed to the kitchen. Before we could comment, she’d gobbled it down. A few more nuggets were gone in a heartbeat. Buster was feeling hungry or perhaps a tad jealous, so we gave him his own dish of his own food. Happily dining, he’d glance at Chelsey once in a while. In what I consider a beautiful moment, she looked up at me and meowed. Now, surely it was a tiny one, but to her, it was a tiger’s growl. Dipping her head, she made it clear that she was still hungry.
We were afraid to overfeed her, but God only knows when she’d really eaten last. About a handful of food later, she was full. It was a beautiful thing. Not too long after, she meowed again, this time at the door where her litter box is kept. She marched right in & used the litter box with zero discomfort! All poison, for lack of a better word, from the stink bugs was gone. Real food in her system made her one sleepy girl. She slept for about 10 straight hours.
I was worried, again needlessly. My husband reminded me that she hadn’t slept the first night here really & we aren’t sure how long she was outdoors in the arctic weather we’d had. This might have been the first quailty sleep she’d gotten in a long time. As an insomniac, I can relate!
When my menfolk had gone to sleep later that night, Chelsey was still counting sheep. My sleepless self was awake reading in my room. Around 4 AM, I had a teeny little visitor meowing at my feet. In true ninja fashion, she’d snuck right in. Climbing into bed with me, she curled up on the adjacent pillow, happily purring as she drifted off to sleep again. That is where she stayed until the alarm went off.
Stay tuned for more Chelsey updates!!!

Chelsey: Day 1

20160305_112740 (2)
Saturday, March 5th started out as a normal day. As usual, my husband had gone to Sam’s Club for his weekly trip to pick up ‘the fun things Mom doesn’t buy’. He arrived back home after getting us breakfast, too. Everything went along as we unloaded the groceries, put them away & began to eat. But, my husband heard a small noise & went to the porch to look.
There stood a small, black kitten pawing at the door. So small, in fact, we hadn’t seen her during all the trips to the truck & back. But, there she was. Scooping her into his hand, which she barely filled, he called for me to come & look. Acting as if she’d known us for years, she hopped out of his lowered hand, brushed against my leg, & went straight for the dog’s water. Lapping like she’d not had a drink ever, we stood there astonished.
Buster, our terrier mix, is a big boy & I was certain he’d scare her right back to the porch. Instead, he surprised us as usual. Belly crawling, he went over to his water dish & began drinking alongside her. She lifter her head just once & continued.
After she’d had her fill, she moved to the food dish with Buster’s encouragement. I know, cats shouldn’t be eating dog food. But, we weren’t prepared & had no ‘cat-friendly’ food immediately available. She ate just a few pieces of his food & it occurred to us that Buster does favor the dry food that contains salmon.
Little Miss proceeded to check out the house, walking room to room before deciding to perch herself on our youngest son’s arm. Immediately, she was asleep. We took this opportunity to check her ears & do a quick tick check. Nothing appeared abnormal. A quick family meeting resulted in me driving to our nearest Dollar General. Purchasing a litter pan and other kitty essentials, I arrived back to find her cradled in my son’s arms still.
My husband, who has had many cats through the years, set up an area for her. We placed her in the litter box & were shocked when she immediately used it. She then drank more water but didn’t seem to want to eat. I took to Facebook to contact several phenomenal ladies who I knew would help. Their advice was a God send. Meanwhile, my husband dubbed her, Chelsey. It is in honor of his favorite cat, also all black, named Chester. So, Miss Chelsey ran back to the litter box a second time.
This is when we knew without a doubt she needed our help. Her bowel movement was completely stink bugs. Nothing but stinkbugs. This little darling had been surviving by eating a bug everyone hates. It didn’t get its name for nothing, after all! I had no idea what to do. I prayed, of course, that we’d do the right things. She needed help. As God often does, he pointed me in the right direction, by consulting the PetCo website. Wouldn’t you know, there was a Vet clinic the next day!
After the day had flown by in a blur of Buster being too loving with her, her exploring, & trying to figure out what to do, before we knew it, it was bedtime. Initially, she fell asleep on bed of our youngest. However, after everyone else was asleep, I heard her crying. Her stomach must have been killing her. She spent a lot of time in the litter box that night. On the bright side, by morning, there was no more evidence of stink bugs in her system.
Despite being exhausted, I thanked God that she was looking better. In fact, by first light, she was purring! She was able to eat a bit of ‘real’ food & sleep a few hours before the vet’s. I’ll detail that in Part 2. To be continued…………

Killing Me Softly: Bianca Sloane

Married just six months, Tracy Ellis has an enviable life. A doting husband, loving family, & successful career are among her accomplishments. When she disappears only to be discovered dead, her face having been bashed in by a rock. Tracy’s sister, Sondra, can’t let go. All signs point to a random act of violence. It doesn’t make sense, but everyone else has accepted it as truth.

Sondra, a documentary filmmaker, starts looking at a box of memories from Tracy’s past. Realizing that her sister deserves complete justice, Sondra begins uncovering unknown details about Tracy’s new, married life. Things aren’t adding up & Sondra believes wholeheartedly that the investigation was mishandled.

She’s on a dangerous path, but her unwavering devotion to her sister keeps her going. Was Tracy just a randomly chosen victim? Or did someone take her life purposely? Sondra won’t stop until the truth is out.

Bianca Sloane has crafted quite a tale. Alert readers may very well figure things out or think they have by the middle of the novel. There are definitely some steep twists & turns. Certain parts I did not see coming.

Sondra is the sister that anyone would want. She is relentless & a strong heroine. The majority of the women depicted are strong, independent, & family oriented. They’re not characters with a stereotypical ‘victim’ mentality. Although I could have done without a good chunk of the violence mentioned, graphically, I understand that our author wanted to get her point across about how intense certain situations really were.

Despite the intense subject matter, it was the type of book I looked forward to reading when I was able. It most definitely will hook readers until the end. I give it four stars.
*Previously published as ‘Live & Let Die’. **Sensitive readers: Contains both sex & violence.
