The Gentle Revolutionaries By Don Lord

_225_350_Book.1219.coverSYNOPSIS: The Gentle Revolutionaries is a novel based on the lives of two prominent American missionaries, Dan and Emelie Bradley, who became close friends with the famous monk, later King Mongkut. Their diaries and letters, as well as the Thai’s evaluation of them, destroys the false image of Thailand an English writer had created.

I gathered from the author’s introduction that this book came about in response to his familiarity with works by Margaret Landon & Anna Leonowens. Both ladies established well known works on Siam aka Thailand. However, as a college student, Don Lord discovered research refuting the portrayal of Siam’s monarchs. Theater-goers will recognize the mentions of ‘The King & I’. According to Lord’s research, the works by both ladies are flawed & commercialized.

In an effort to set the record straight, ‘The Gentle Revolutionaries’ was written. Mr. Lord has poured a great deal of time & effort into this work. Although readers will be aware that they are reading a novel, it does present itself as a non-fiction piece in style.

At times, it reads about like a history textbook. Truly the love & lives of the Bradley’s is a beautiful story. But, unless one is a diehard fan of historical non-fiction, they may have an issue reading the book as a novel. There are places where the dialogue & ‘facts’ are quite dry.

Those who loved ‘The King & I’ or variations of it will want to read ‘The Gentle Revolutionaries’ in order to get the bigger picture & a more factual view of the story as a whole. Other than those specific readers & perhaps the non-fiction crowd, it may not be your cup of tea.

Well-written, it’s gets a 4 star rating for its genre, it just wasn’t right for me.
