The Jungle Book: An Animal Primer’: Jennifer Adams

Exciting news: This we51mebrapLsL__AA278_PIkin4,BottomRight,0,22_AA300_SH20_OU01_ek KiteReaders is releasing 3 new BabyLit titles! Anna Karenina, The Jungle Book & Wuthering Heights- all powerhouses in the world of literature are now made with your baby in mind! It is never too early to begin getting your kids acclimated to reading. Following a doctor’s advice, I began reading to my boys when they came home from the hospital. Test scores worldwide back up this practice.

Obviously, these editions are stream-lined for early learning. Jennifer Adams has pulled key characters & characteristics to focus on. Alison Oliver fills each page with bright, eye-catching illustrations. Kite Readers has even included a free audio inside.

Let’s take a look at ‘The Jungle Book’. Each page contains the animal name such as Wolf, its picture, & something about them such as a characteristic. Parents will recognize these characters right away. With babies/toddlers, short & sweet is usually best. This edition of ‘The Jungle Book’ is perfectly timed to keep interest while the pictures have a great balance of color. There isn’t so much as to overstimulate yet isn’t so muted that they’ll lose interest.

Personally, I adore the idea of starting great literature young. BabyLit eBooks combine the best of technology (eReaders) with classic, written word. I’m so pleased to see this series & can’t recommend ‘The Jungle Book’ enough! Well-done!

I received an eBook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

Echoes of Mercy: Kim Vogel Sawyer

What better place could you imagine for a story to take place in than a chocolate factory?  Dinsmore Chocolate Factory in Sinclair, Kansas to be exact. However, this factory has been the scene of an unfortunate accident. Caroline Lang goes undercover by posing as a factory worker to look into the circumstances of the event plus how the factory treats its child workers. Caroline’s an investigator for the Labor Commission.  As a devout woman of faith, she is driven to see children liberated from adult work.

Simultaneously, Oliver Dinsmore, of the Dinsmore candy dynasty, launches his own investigation. Oliver masquerades as “Ollie Moore,” a regular worker. Before he inherits the business from his father, he wants to do his own research about the factory. While working, Caroline and Oliver become friendly, but are at opposite ends of the spectrum regarding the role of children in the workplace. Once their true identities are revealed, can their relationship survive?

Kim Vogel Sawyer has taken a simple concept & woven in an incredible amount of depth. Here we have Caroline crossing all sorts of lines to follow her morals: faith, gender, social inequality, etc. Readers will sense Caroline’s passion for helping others, exhibiting a true servant’s heart. Of course, for every heroine there must be a complete antithesis. That would be Ollie who has no faith-based drive & has lived with a golden cup & silver spoon.

Christian fiction fans will love Caroline’s ability to stick to her guns in the face of hardship & adversity. Kim Vogel Sawyer is in her element with this novel. She’s provided her fans with what they love & will no doubt gain more than a few new fans as well. Well-written with a great storyline & characters, it’s a 4 star novel.

prAna Sustainable Clothing Giveaway

When it comes to living a green, eco-friendly life, one place it is easy to get hung up on is clothing.  We live in a world where manufacturers engage in processes that use harsh chemicals and release toxins into the air, water and ground – not to mention coating the very clothing we will be wearing in them.  Companies like prAna pride themselves on using organic textiles, green and sustainable living manufacturing processes and eco-friendly packaging to help keep the world a better place.

Krista over at Gloriously Green Gal recently shared her thoughts on the sustainable clothing from prAna and how they add bold styles with green practices that make for a fashion-forward line that will keep the Earth healthier, longer!

If you would like to win an outfit from prAna, enter with the giveaway tool below.  One US, 18+ winner will select a top, bottom and accessory of his/her choice to win.  It will run from February 26, 2014 through March 19, 2014 at 11 PM CST.  If you have won a prAna giveaway on any blog in the last six months, you are not eligible to win.  All entries will be verified.  Winner will be emailed (consider adding to your safe list) and will have 48 hours to respond or prize is forfeited and a new winner will be selected.

Donuts: Julia Dweck

Donuts! Did that grab your attention? One of our favorite breakfast delicacies is the focus of Julia Dweck’s book.

Merl, the last of the squirrels, lives alone in a land devoid of trees. All the trees have been chopped down. Luckily, he makes a magical wish on a lone acorn & delights when a tree grows. But, Merl’s tree has no fruit or nuts on it. After a visit to the park, Merl is given a donut by a friendly man. Not exactly the kind of nut you’d think a squirrel would want, is it?

However, Merl discovers what I’ve known for decades- donuts are awesome! When crumbs fall all around, the tree begins to bloom. Like no oak tree before it, it grows donuts. When word spreads to other animals, Merl’s desolate world becomes over packed with visitors. Can Merl balance his new found food with the overpopulation around him?

Filled with fantastic art provided by Adam Duff, Julia Dweck provides us with the wholesome entertainment we’ve come to expect from her. She has an unbelievable talent to capture our hearts & minds through her writing. My kids adore her work & yours will too. In each story, she provides a strong lead character, like Merl, who has a will to survive, never gives up, & has a solid moral compass. I recommend her work highly.

True, five star children’s books, like Donuts, are available to us through Kite Readers. Visit their site for the full catalog. Julia Dweck’s work is also sold through Amazon.
